Mumbai now has two airports, and it’s important to keep this in mind when booking flights, especially if you have a connecting flight. The new Navi Mumbai Airport (NMI) has started handling commercial flights, while the old Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) continues to operate.
CSMIA (BOM) — the old airport, closer to the city center
Navi Mumbai Airport (NMI) — the new airport, located farther from the city center in Navi Mumbai
👉 Why this matters? Choosing the right airport affects:
NMI is located in Navi Mumbai, approximately 35–50 km from central Mumbai.
Travel time by car or taxi is around 1–1.5 hours, depending on traffic.
Currently, the airport only serves domestic flights within India.
International flights will be introduced in future phases.
When booking tickets, always check which airport your flight departs from or arrives at, to avoid confusion during connecting flights.
Choosing the correct airport can save you time, money, and stress when planning your trip to Mumbai.
